A double win for Toyota at AJAC's Green Car of the Year

In its third annual Automobile Journalists Association of Canada's (AJAC) Canadian Green Car of the Year awards, Toyota pulled a rare clean sweep at a press conference at the 2017 Vancouver International Auto Show.

The Toyota Prius with Technology Package took top honours as the 2017 Canadian Green Car of the Year, besting the 2017 Kia Optima HEV and the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid.

The 2017 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year award went to the 2017 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid taking victory over the other two finalists, the 2017 Subaru Forester and 2017 Mazda CX-9.

“Toyota is committed to maintaining its leadership position in designing, engineering and building environmentally-advanced vehicles that meet the many demands of today’s drivers,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice-President, Toyota Canada Inc.

This was the second year that AJAC split the car and utility categories up. For 2016, the winners were the Chevrolet Volt and the Mazda CX-3; while in its inaugural year, the sole winner was the Kia Soul EV.

Toyota sets the bar high for new Camry

Detroit, MI - The Toyota Camry is on a roll, as the best-selling passenger car in the United States and the best-selling mid-size sedan in Canada. At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, the upcoming 2018 got a whole lot better.

The new version was highly anticipated thanks to Toyota's New Global Architecture (TNGA) that will transform not only the Camry, but many of its other vehicles with a new dynamic, athletic and wide stance – a refreshing change away from its more conservative styling. The new construction increases the wheelbase by two-inches, as well as over an inch in the hood and roofline.

In developing the next-generation Toyota Camry, we were able to start with a clean slate, which allowed us to create a true driver’s car,” said Masato Katsumata, the Chief Engineer of the new Toyota Camry.

Under the hood will be three options: a new 2.5-litre inline-four, a retuned 3.5-litre V-6 and a hybrid version that will utilize that 2.5-litre unit along with its own electrification system. The two gas versions will be matched to a new eight-speed automatic transmission; while the hybrid will be connected to a continuously variable transmission that has a Sport Mode for quicker gear shifting when needed. Numbers haven't been released yet for the powertrains, but Toyota claims that the new engine will have higher torque, power and reduced fuel economy. In addition, the chassis will possess increased handling skills that can even be found on the hybrid, as the battery pack has moved from the trunk to below the rear seat.

As far as looks go, the Camry features a two-piece grille that works well with its lowered hood design. The whole package comes off as sleek throughout with sharp lines in the body to add to its character.

On the inside, the Camry will have Toyota's Human Machine Interface with the latest technologies added. Three interlinked displays will show off the upgraded look with a 10-inch colour Head-Up Display, a 7-inch multi-information display that's capped off by an 8-inch infotainment screen.

Not lost on the Camry is Toyota's Safety Sense P that comes standard. This suite of safety technologies enhances the value of the mid-size sedan that includes: Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams. Other optional features include Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The 2018 aggressively-styled Toyota Camry is expected to arrive in showrooms in late 2017.

Scion FR-S becomes the Toyota 86

Toyota has announced that the Scion FR-S will become the Toyota 86.

After the discontinuation of Toyota's youthful Scion brand, we always new the vehicles that were continuing on would be re-badged. The one thing we didn't know was that they would be given new names.

For now, the FR-S is the Toyota 86, which is not a big change considering that the 86 is the name of the FR-S in other parts of the world.

"When we announced the transition of the Scion models to Toyota we hadn't planned on changing the names of our cars, but by popular demand, for our sports car, we decided to adopt the global name of 86," said Bill Fay, Toyota Division Group Vice President.

The 86 will come to light in North America as a 2017 model year car with the same rear-wheel drive sports car setup, but with other enhancements. According to Toyota, the 86 will receive a more aggressive front fascia, a new rear bumper and LED headlights and taillights. The bold look is finished off with new alloy twist-spoke wheels and the 86 logo on the front fender and front headlamps.

Inside, new “Grandlux” material will be added on the instrument panel, accompanied by new seating materials with silver stitching and a sporty steering wheel also donning the 86 logo.

The looks are a big factor for this car, but it will also receive some enhanced performance, well at least for the manual version. For the manual option, its 2.0-litre boxer-four engine will increase production to 205 hp and 156 lb.-ft. of torque, which is an uptick of 5 hp and 5 lb.-ft. of torque. In addition, Toyota has setup new gear ratios for the six-speed manual transmission in order to enhance its performance.

The new 2017 Toyota 86 will be on display at the upcoming 2016 New York International Auto Show, alongside the Toyota C-HR crossover concept.
