The Redesigned 2014 Toyota Tundra is Unveiled at Edmonton Motor Show

EDMONTON, AB - The next generation Tundra received its Canadian reveal today at the 2013 Edmonton Motor Show-- in the heart of truck country.  Canadian truck owners know that it’s a proven, capable pickup, yet the new Tundra introduces new features, a new, more chiseled body style and even higher levels of in-cab refinement.

“We reached out to our North American customers, taking their feedback to heart,” noted Larry Hutchinson, Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc. “The result is a new 2014 Tundra that responds to truck buyers from all walks of life with a hard-working, class-leading full-size pickup with a more chiseled exterior and a smart, advanced and refined interior.”

The next generation, 2014 Toyota Tundra is designed, engineered and assembled in North America.  Toyota’s North American-based Calty Design and Research chiseled and sharpened the exterior, created a more aggressive grille, a more rugged bed design, and a refined in cabin experience. Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America engineers boosted ride quality and straight-line stability to new performance levels, and equipped every model with a back-up camera, integrated Bluetooth® connectivity, and more. New available technologies include Toyota’s Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert systems.

Understanding that truck buyers use their vehicles for anything from heavy-duty work, to a mobile office and daily commuter to a family hauler, the Tundra builds upon its solid platform and adds more class-up features and options.  Existing large audio controls for gloved hands are maintained, but closer to reach.  NVH has been improved for great interior quiet.  And, in addition to the well-appointed Platinum model, a new 1794 Edition will be available, which features a distinctive saddle brown embossed leather interior with suede accent and soft touch features.

Tundra continues to offer a choice of five grades with multiple cab and bed configurations and 2 powerful yet fuel-efficient i-FORCE V8 engines.  Canadians will still experience best-in-class front brakes, the segment’s only standard knee airbags, the segment’s largest cabin (on CrewMax models), the segment’s tightest turning radius, competitive towing and hauling capability, and an impressive list of standard safety features and technologies.

The redesigned 2014 Tundra will surely be the first choice for independent, resourceful truck buyers when it goes on sale in Canada this Summer, with pricing and additional details to be revealed closer to launch.

2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 unveiled in New York: the Most Track-capable Camaro Ever

NEW YORK – Chevrolet today introduced the restyled 2014 Camaro line at the New York Auto Show, including the return of the Z/28, the most iconic model in Camaro history.

The 2014 Camaro models feature a revised exterior design that integrates high-performance aerodynamics for more efficient cooling and stability at high speeds. The new Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamics package that creates downforce at speed, which helps make it the most track-capable offering in Camaro's history.

"As the ultimate track-capable Camaro, this car restores the mission of the original Z/28, and serves as a testament to the expertise of Chevrolet as the best-selling brand of performance cars," said Mark Reuss, president, GM North America. "The build sheet is the wish list of any racer: lightweight, high-revving, dry-sump LS7 engine; carbon-ceramic brakes; integrated coolers for track use; true aerodynamic downforce, and a significant reduction in curb weight. This car could only come from Chevrolet, and could only be called the Z/28."

The first Camaro Z/28 was introduced in 1967, created to compete in the Sports Car Club of America's Trans-Am 2 class. It featured a smaller, lighter, 302-cubic-inch V-8 for improved weight balance, as well as quick-ratio steering and a heavy-duty suspension for track use. In keeping with its road-racing focus, the 1967 Camaro Z/28 was not available with an automatic transmission or air conditioning.

While the new Camaro Z/28 is not intended to compete in a specific race series, it is solely focused on track capability. In initial testing, the Camaro Z/28 is three seconds faster per lap than the Camaro ZL1. That extra speed comes from three areas:

- Increased grip: The Z/28 is capable of 1.05 g in cornering acceleration, due to comprehensive chassis revisions

- Increased stopping power: the Z/28 features Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes capable of 1.5 g in deceleration, and consistent brake feel, lap after lap

- Reduced curb weight: The naturally aspirated Z/28 weighs 300 pounds less than the supercharged Camaro ZL1, with changes ranging from lightweight wheels to thinner rear-window glass

- Like the original, the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is offered only with a manual transmission. In a nod to modern convenience, air-conditioning is available, but only as an option.

"We set out to make the fastest road-racing Camaro possible that was still street-legal," said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. "While the Camaro ZL1 offers exceptional performance on the street, the drag strip, and the track, the Z/28 is entirely focused on the track performance. The Z/28 will be too track-focused for most drivers, but offers road-racers one of the most capable track cars ever offered from an automaker."

The new 2014 Camaro line will arrive at Chevrolet dealers later in 2013. The Camaro Z/28 is expected to be appearing at track events across the United States in spring 2014.

High-performance aerodynamics highlight changes for 2014 Camaro

The 2014 Camaro represents the most significant redesign since the introduction of the fifth-generation Camaro as a concept car in 2006.

"The 2014 Camaro is our opportunity to apply what we have learned listening to our customers, and our continuing development of high-performance models," said Tom Peters, Camaro exterior design director. "We look for solutions that are both functional and beautiful so that the result is genuine Chevrolet – simple, powerful, honest, and more than expected."

Compared to the previous model, the design represents a strong visual change front and rear, resulting in a wider, lower, more contemporary appearance. The front fascia features a wider lower opening, and a narrower upper opening that also updates the appearance of the iconic "halo ring" HID headlamps on the Camaro RS package. The functional hood vent on the Camaro SS helps reduce heat and aerodynamic lift. Moving to the rear, the sculptural decklid, horizontal lamps and diffuser complete the powerful statement.

The Camaro Z/28 also features a full aerodynamic package designed to produce downforce at track speeds. At the front, the Z/28 features a large splitter, connected to an underbody panel that further reduces lift. In profile, the Z/28 features fender flares over the front and rear wheels, as well as extended rocker panels that contribute to aerodynamic stability. An aggressive rear spoiler and functional diffuser complete the aerodynamic package.

On the interior, the Camaro Z/28 features trim in a distinctive, matte-metallic finish named Octane, the ZL1 flat-bottomed steering wheel, and standard Recaro seats with microfiber suede inserts. The new seats (also available on the coupe versions of the SS and ZL1 models), feature aggressive bolsters for high-performance driving, as well as seat cutouts inspired by the five-point harnesses found on racing seats. To save weight, both front seats incorporate manual adjustment.

The rear seats of the Z/28 have also been modified for weight reduction. A total of nine pounds (four kilograms) was saved by eliminating the seat-back pass through, as well as using high-density foam in place of the rigid structure of the seat back and steel mesh of the seat bottom.

"Unlike the Ford Mustang Boss 302, we felt it was important to keep the 2+2 configuration of the Camaro Z/28 as Chevrolet already has a world-class two-seat sports car in the Corvette," said Oppenheiser. "By modifying the construction of the rear seat, we were able to reduce the overall weight of the Z/28 while still preserving the flexibility of 2+2 seating."

7.0L, LS7 the heart of the Camaro Z/28's track-capable performance

Like the original, the new Camaro Z/28 forgoes ultimate horsepower and torque for improved weight balance and track performance.

In 1967, the most-powerful engine available in a factory Camaro was a 396 cid V-8 with 375 horsepower. To prepare the Camaro Z/28 for road racing, engineers specified a lighter, 302 cid V-8, officially rated at 290 horsepower. While the 302 was not the choice for drag racers, it proved ideal for sports-car racing.

Today, the most-powerful engine offered is the Camaro ZL1's supercharged 6.2L LSA, which delivers 580 horsepower. The heart of the 2014 Camaro Z/28 is the lighter, naturally aspirated 7.0L LS7 first introduced in the Corvette Z06.

"The LS7 is ideal for road racing because it delivers amazing performance in a compact, lightweight package," said Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer and program manager. "The broad torque curve and high redline of the LS7 mean fewer shifts are required for each lap, while the lightweight design improves the front-to-rear weight balance for better handling."

Co-developed with Corvette Racing, the hand-assembled 7.0L (427 cid) V-8 uses a number of high-performance components, including:

- Titanium intake valves and connecting rods, and sodium-filled exhaust valves

- CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads

- Forged-steel crankshaft and main bearing caps

- High-lift camshaft

- Hydroformed exhaust headers

- 11.0:1 compression ratio, and a 7,000 rpm redline.

- 10.5-quart, dry-sump oiling system

For the Camaro Z/28, the LS7 features unique induction and exhaust systems, and delivers at least 500 horsepower (373 kW) and 470 lb-ft of torque (637 Nm).

The racing-style, cold-air induction system and large K&N air filter provide maximum air flow.

The standard dual mode exhaust system and larger-diameter pipes enable improved air flow. By bypassing the mufflers during acceleration, the system increases both the torque and sound generated by the LS7 engine.

The Camaro Z/28 is exclusively offered with a Tremec TR6060 manual transmission. The six-speed features close-ratio gearing and 3.91:1 final drive ratio, both optimized for the power characteristics of the LS7.

Power is distributed to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential featuring a helical gear set, rather than traditional clutch packs. The new design enables the driver to apply more power and get through corners faster, by continuously adjusting the torque bias to maximize available traction.

The differential works in unison with Chevrolet's proprietary Performance Traction Management system, which allows drivers to adjust the level of throttle and brake intervention to match their capability and driving environment.

Unlike some competitors' "track package" offerings, the Camaro Z/28 makes standard all the cooling systems required for track use. This includes the dry-sump oiling system for the LS7, which is connected to an integral liquid-to-liquid cooling system for engine oil.

A second liquid-to-liquid system provides cooling for the transmission and differential. This system pumps overcooled transmission fluid to a heat exchanger in the rear differential before traveling to the transmission. This reduces differential temperatures as much as 100 degrees F.

Camaro Z/28 chassis delivers 1.05 g in cornering grip

The singular focus of the Camaro Z/28 is most evident in the chassis, where the most has been made of every component for track use, from the ultra-high performance tires to race-proven dampers.

"We used the very best components in the industry to deliver uncompromised performance, lap after lap," said Mark Stielow, Camaro Z/28 engineering manager. "We made nearly 200 changes to improve the track performance, which cumulatively make the Z/28 capable of 1.05 g in cornering. For perspective, with all other things, equal increasing maximum grip from 1 to 1.05 g can cut up to four seconds per lap."

The Camaro Z/28 is the one of the first production cars fitted with race-proven, spool-valve dampers. Compared to a conventional damper that offers only two-way tuning for bump and rebound, a spool-valve damper allows four-way adjustment to precisely tune both bump and rebound settings for high-speed and low-speed wheel motions. The wider tuning range allowed engineers to dramatically increase the damper stiffness on the Camaro Z/28 without a significant change in ride quality. Additional chassis changes include stiffer string rates and suspension bushings for improved cornering response.

The Camaro Z/28 features 19-inch diameter wheels and tires, which reduce unsprung weight by 42 pounds (19 kilograms) per car compared to the 20-inch wheels standard on Camaro SS and ZL1. In addition, the smaller diameter wheels lower the center of gravity by 33 millimeters, further improving handling.

At all four corners, the lightweight, forged aluminum wheels are wrapped in massive 305/30ZR19 tires. This is the first production application of ultra-high performance Pirelli PZero Trofeo R tires, and believed to be the widest front tire on any production car.

To fully exploit the grip of the Pirelli tires, the Camaro Z/28 also features Brembo Carbon Ceramic Matrix™ rotors and fixed, monoblock calipers. The large 394 x 36 mm front rotors are paired with six-piston calipers, while the 390 x 32 mm rear rotors are paired four-piston calipers. Compared to similar-size, two-piece steel rotors, the lightweight carbon discs save 28 pounds (12.5 kilograms) per car.

The combination of tire grip and braking power enable the Camaro Z/28 to achieve up to 1.5 g in deceleration. With standard front brake cooling ducts, the Z/28 is also capable of continuous track use unmatched brake feel, lap after lap.

"What makes the Z/28 so addictive is it inspires confidence through every section on the track," said Stielow. "The incredible, balanced performance helps you carry much more speed through every corner: the brakes are so good you can adjust your braking points later and later; the grip and suspension damping allows you to carry more speed through the apex; and then the limited slip allows you to make the most of the LS7 as you power out of the corner."

Extensive lightweighting saved 300 pounds over the Camaro ZL1

To optimize the track performance of the Camaro Z/28, the engineering team subjected it to an intensive lightweighting program, saving 100 pounds (45 kilograms) compared to the naturally aspirated Camaro SS and 300 pounds (136 kilograms) to the supercharged Camaro ZL1.

"We looked at every subsystem for opportunities to save weight," said Oppenheiser. "Our goal was to get rid of everything that didn't make the car faster, and keep only what was required by law. For example, we wanted to eliminate the audio system completely, but we had to keep a single speaker for the seat-belt chime to meet safety requirements."

World Premiere of the Subaru Viziv Concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

Tokyo - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the manufacturer of Subaru automobiles, unveiled the "SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT" today at the 83rd Geneva International Motor Show (Press day: March 5 and 6; Open to the public from March 7 through 17 in Switzerland).

Exterior Design

  • A future-generation crossover concept providing high efficiency and performance on all road surface conditions and driving environments has been created with a new Subaru design philosophy.

  • The basic design features simple and clean surfaces and lines. The aim was to create the ideal balance between a solid-looking body and a condensed cabin.

  • The front-end design boldly emphasizes the motifs common to Subaru products. The larger and outwardly projecting grille provides the keynote of the front-end design, and is the point from which the entire front end connects into a solid, dynamic design.

  • The simple and powerful motifs of the sides create a new Subaru design element. The grand outward sweep of the integrated fenders and the solid door panel forms create a dynamic side view design.

  • The upper cabin highlights the window graphics evocative of the shooting-brake body style. It contrasts with a solid body panel design, creating a sporty, lean silhouette.

  • The rear design also features the same Subaru motifs used in the front. The rear combination lamp features an iconic Subaru motif, and the hexagonal panel surrounded by lamps projects outward in the center.

  • The "Mistral Silver Metallic" exterior color highlights the dynamic, stylish exterior design of the "SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT".

Interior Design

Like the exterior, the interior invokes the promise of dynamic road performance. While great care was taken to design a highly refined environment, interior space was also designed to embody Subaru's renowned functionality, peace of mind and fun for all occupants.

The cockpit features an instrument panel layout designed primarily for ease of driver operation and vehicle control. The instrument panel displays the operation status of Subaru's own driving assist "EyeSight" system. The tachometer and speedometer in the center combine functionality and sportiness, featuring a unique cylindrical design and outstanding visibility.

Custom information displays in front of the front passenger seat and in the rear seating area let passengers share the thrill of being in the driver's seat.

Packaging

To implement Subaru's development concept of human-centered engineering, the two-door, four-seat stylish and sporty body was given a packaging design enabling four adults to ride comfortably even on long road trips.

The 100% motor-driven rear wheels eliminate the need for a propeller shaft, creating a lower floor that offers ample legroom for rear seat occupants despite its compact size.

Power Units

"Subaru Boxer Diesel Hybrid", as a proposal to the future of Subaru power units, was mounted in the "SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT". The powertrain is a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0-litre Subaru Boxer diesel engine and high-torque-compatible Lineartronic (CVT) with a front motor that provides both vehicle drive and power generation, and two independent rear motors for vehicle drive only. By achieving solid environmental and road performance with this powertrain, Subaru's "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" driving experience will be further advanced.

The powertrain selects the best time to use each power unit according to its strengths and the driving application, achieving high fuel economy. The motors start and drive the vehicle during low-speed or city driving, while the diesel engine and high-efficiency Lineartronic take over on the highway.

"Hybrid SI-DRIVE" system has an "Eco-Cruise" mode that provides coordinated control in conjunction with the "EyeSight" driving assistance system in addition to "Intelligent" and "Sports" modes. Engine and motor power are subjected to fine-tuned control according to the travel conditions captured and detected by the EyeSight's stereo camera, creating an intelligent driving feature designed for safety and environmental friendliness.

AWD (All-Wheel drive) System

"Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD" system which is leading the way to a future generation of Subaru AWD technology has been adopted for the SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT. Subaru is constantly refining its unique AWD systems according to the development philosophy "Four-wheel management". "Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD" system provides fine-tuned control of the four wheels to match the travel environment and road surface conditions.

Two motors exclusively developed for rear wheels' drive control the rear right and left drive power freely. Coordinated management system of the front and rear motor controls the division of drive power between the front and rear wheels. It increases Subaru's trademark active safety performance. Turning the steering wheel increases the drive power applied to the rear, creating a handling characteristic that responds nimbly to driver operations. Turning the steering wheel back increases the drive power applied to the front, creating a handling characteristic that emphasizes stability.

In stop-and-go city traffic, all wheels are driven by the motors when starting from rest, providing high starting torque and powerful acceleration, but low fuel consumption with quiet ride.

By independently controlling the drive power applied to the left and right rear wheels, the rear drive system provides more torque to the outside rear wheel and less to the inside rear wheel when cornering to generate inner-directed yaw momentum on the vehicle and achieve extremely quick and smooth "on-the-rail cornering". Besides helping acceleration and all-terrain performance, this groundbreaking AWD system also uses drive power to help turn the vehicle. Along with its thrilling handling and cornering that responds faithfully to driver operations, it also offers outstanding handling stability that ensures a high level of secure feeling and confident drive.

Minimum turning radius can be compact due to "Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD" system, thus superior maneuverability has been achieved.

McLaren unveils sleek hybrid supercar at Geneva

GENEVA - Hybrids aren't just for fuel economy any more.

McLaren on Tuesday unveiled a sleek hybrid supercar at the Geneva Motor Show. Sculpted from carbon fiber, in a glittery racing yellow set off by hash-marked slate grey, the McLaren P1 cuts a racetrack figure while boasting superior — for its class — emissions under 200 grams per kilometre. That compares with over 300 grams/kilometre for a super car without hybrid.

P1 program director Paul McKenzie says the hybrid technology has performance advantages because the electric engine fills in the gap before the turbo engine kicks in. It's a tiny effect, but everything counts in supercars.

The P1 can do 0-180 mph (0-300 kph) in under 17 seconds. It sells for $1.3 million, with just 375 in the series.

2013 Geneva Motor Show: FT-86 Open concept

Brussels, Belgium - The FT-86 Open concept makes its World Debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

Following the global success of the exhilarating, entirely driver-oriented GT86, the FT-86 Open concept has been created to gauge customer reaction to the possible launch of a convertible version of Toyota’s remarkable, front ‘boxer’ engined, rear-wheel drive, compact 2+2 sports car.

The FT-86 Open concept is designed to combine all the lively, accessible performance and highly engaging, readily exploitable dynamic abilities of the GT86 with the even greater levels of driving pleasure derived from open-topped motoring.

4,240 mm long, 1,775 mm wide, 1,270 mm high and with a wheelbase of 2,570 mm, the FT-86 Open concept features a multi-layered fabric roof construction with a glass rear screen.

The concept vehicle retains the GT86’s 2+2 seating format, the roof being stowed behind fixed rear seats with minimal impact on luggage capacity.

Using an intense contrast between pure bright white and the modern navy blue, the colour combination has been designed to express the sense of elegant performance, fully reflecting the spirit and the atmosphere of Milan, one of the world leaders in fashion design.

The concept’s elegant, white exterior, navy blue fabric roof and pure bright white interior upholstery and trim create a luxurious yet sporting image. Appropriately reflecting the ultimate symbol of sporting success, the carpets are finished in a golden yellow hue.

The FT-86 Open concept’s unique colour scheme is further coordinated through the use of a navy blue backing to the upholstery perforation holes and golden yellow accent stitching to the seat leather.

The FT-86 Open concept shares the platform and powertrain of the GT86; the world’s first horizontally opposed engine with D-4S injection technology –a 1,998 cc, low centre of gravity, naturally aspirated, high-revving sports engine capable of developing 100 DIN hp per litre- driving the rear wheels via a short throw, ‘flick of the wrist’ manual gear shift or a 6-speed automatic transmission with the world’s fastest paddle shifting speed of only 0.2 seconds.

MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear suspension systems offer direct handling feel, instant response and superb controllability; electric power steering offers a quick, 13.1 gear ratio on a par with that of racing cars; and large all-round ventilated disc brakes offer unique pedal feel for car control finesse.

Toyota has identified numerous areas within which further engineering evaluation must be undertaken. Detailed assessment will be required to establish the impact on performance of any changes in vehicle rigidity, balance, weight and aerodynamics.

Because, through the adoption of such features as frameless doors, the GT86 was designed ‘package protected’ with a cabriolet in mind, the impact on structural rigidity of conversion to an open-topped bodyshell is not expected to be great. Furthermore, various efficient solutions to preserve rigidity are being analysed, such as the use of door lock reinforcements.

The GT86 boasts a near perfect, 53:47 weight distribution for ideal response to even subtle steering, throttle and brake inputs, and an ultra-low centre of gravity of just 460 mm. Whilst the adoption of a fabric roof is likely to have a positive effect on the centre of gravity, lowering it even further, detailed engineering analysis will be required to match the balance of the coupe.

Comprehensive weight saving measures give the GT86 a total vehicle weight of only 1,257 kg, and a resultant power-to-weight ratio of some 160 DIN hp per tonne. The best possible power-to-weight ratio being fundamental to performance in a vehicle with a relatively small capacity engine, engineering a cabriolet as ‘weight-neutral’ relative to the coupe represents a key area of study in the event of the project progressing to fruition.

Preview of the 40th Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto

Auto show season is always an exciting time of the year and the measuring stick for the Canadian auto shows is definitely the one held in Toronto. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Toronto event known as the Canadian International AutoShow (CIAS), which will open to the public starting on Friday, February the 15th and run all the way to February 24th.

The theme of this year’s 2013 show is “The Legacy” which takes a look at the past, the new attractions of the present and visions of the future. The combination of the three are typical in most events, so it will be a wait and see to find out what Toronto will do to make this year special.

The day before the doors open, Canadian media members will have a private viewing of the new unveils and displays, as well as learning who the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) have chosen as the Canadian vehicles of the year. Last year’s winners were the Hyundai Elantra and the Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel for car and utility vehicle, respectively.

This year’s finalists for vehicle of the year are the Honda Accord Sedan, the Porsche Boxster and once again the Hyundai Elantra in its GT version. The two cars in contention for Utility vehicle of the year are the Ford Escape 1.6 L EcoBoost and the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2.0T.

The CIAS brought in over 300,000 people last year throughout their ten days in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and they’re excited to increase that number once again. There’s a lot to check out in both the north and south areas of the convention centre including 125 exhibitors with approximately 1,000 cars and trucks on display and 40 new Canadian reveals. Is it a coincidence that there are exactly 40 reveals on the show’s 40th anniversary? Probably not!

There’s also plenty more to see as the CIAS will be bringing back the Auto Exotica section featuring the Ferrari 599XX, the Maserati MC12 Corsa, the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider; there’s the Cruise Nationals section filled with classic vehicle exhibits from the weekly car cruises; and finally, the Hot Rod and Canadian Custom Builders Showcase showing off some auto enthusiasts’ custom creations.

If you’re thinking of heading down to the auto show this year, here’s a little taste of some of the hottest and most intriguing cars on display at the CIAS:

BMW M6 Gran Coupe is a luxurious and performance-minded four-door coupe that’s joining the BMW family. It’s fitted with a 4.4L twin-turbo V-8 with 560 horsepower (hp) and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The M6 will have a seven-speed dual –clutch automatic transmission and it apparently goes from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is the seventh-generation Corvette to be released and the most powerful ever. It’s estimated 450 hp and 450 lb.-ft. of torque will be generated by its all-new LT1 6.2L Small Block V-8 engine. The numbers achieved by the LT1 engine are aided by the combination of modernized technologies such as direct injection and a continuously variable valve timing with an advanced combustion system.

Mazda Canada grows grassroots contingency programs for Canadian Motorsports in 2013

Mazda Canada announced today that after a successful launch in 2012, it will increase its support for competitors who race Mazdas across the country by adding three additional motorsports properties for 2013.

Entering their second year of Mazda's contingency support programs are the Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC), and the Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship.

New for 2013, Mazda Canada is excited to announce the addition of three new grassroots properties whose Mazda racers will be eligible for cash contingencies in 2013. Those three properties are:

-The VCMC Motorsport Club, which has been a cornerstone of the Vancouver, British Columbia area autocross scene since 1982 and has become one of the largest clubs in the region with 280+ members annually.

- Sigma Racing Time Attack, which hosts motorsport events at various race tracks with personal lap timers, professional timing systems with live leaderboard standings, and Time Attack competitions. Off the track, SRTA continues driver development with its range of driving simulators and virtual racing events.

- The Sports Car Club of British Columbia (SCCBC), which was founded as a non-profit society in 1951.  It is their mission to promote, encourage and support motorsport within the Province of British Columbia; organize competitive motor sport events; foster sportsmanship; and give mutual guidance and assistance within the membership.

In addition to cash, Canadian racers are also eligible to compete in the Mazda North American Club Racer Shootout. Bruce McNutt, who won the Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship in 2012, was awarded entry into the 2013 Shootout. The 2013 shootout prize will be a full season in the 2014 SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup valued at $75,000 USD.

For 2013, Mazda Canada is paying contingency awards, for those competitors who are racing eligible Mazda race cars, and who place well in events organized by these five series. Class structures, schedules and vehicle eligibility dictate that the contingency prizing has been customized for each organization.

"Mazda is committed to supporting grassroots motorsports in Canada," said Sandra Lemaitre, National Manager of Public Relations, Mazda Canada. "The expansion of our Canadian contingency program is our way of thanking and supporting those amateur racers who choose to race Mazdas, and helping them pursue their passion."

"Our inaugural year was a tremendous success as we added several Mazdas to our CTCC line-up.  We look forward to 2013 and are thrilled by the continued participation of Mazda Canada Inc." - John Bondar, President, Canadian Touring Car Championship.

"Spec Miata Championship Drivers Association (SMCDA) is very excited that Mazda Canada is a part of the 2013 Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship. Moving into our second year with Mazda Canada contingency program is exciting for everyone. Thank you Mazda Canada, on behalf of all the competitors in the Toyo Tires Miata Championship. - Blu Vandaalen, President, Toyo Tires Spec Miata Championship.

"VCMC Motorsport Club is extremely excited to be a partner in the Mazda Contingency Program for autocross. This program gives a clear and direct statement to drivers in the region that Mazda is serious about grassroots motorsports. We are grateful for this direct and significant support that Mazda Canada has contributed to grassroots motorsports and are confident that this will help grow grassroots motorsports in the region.  Thank you, Mazda!" - Zachary Wong, Vice-President, VCMC Motorsport Club.

"Mazda cars have always been a big part of Sigma Racing Time Attack events and have dominated our leaderboard. We are very excited to see Mazda Canada getting directly involved in grassroots racing.  For most of us, this passion has always been what Mazda is all about." - Peter Sosinski, Sigma Racing Time Attack.

"The Sports Car Club of British Columbia is looking forward to the 2013 race season, and the excitement that the Mazda Canada contingency program will bring to motorsport in BC.  This program will support our commitment of growing grassroots motorsports, and continue to raise the level of competition.  We are pleased to see Mazda's continued involvement in motorsports in Canada, and believe they are a leader in motorsport development." - Steve Hocaluk, President, SCCBC.

Toyota unveils 2014 redesigned Tundra at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show

CHICAGO,IL - Toyota unveiled the redesigned 2014 Tundra full-size pickup truck at a press conference at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

Tundra has been a quality leader with Toyota’s DNA of quality, dependability and reliability. The industry has recognized Tundra with a myriad of awards over the last 12 years, including winning the J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study for seven years running in the Full-Size Pick Up segment. Not resting on its laurels, the 2014 Tundra will be redesigned, inside and out, representing the first major change since the launch of the current generation for the 2007 model year.

The redesigned Tundra continues to be a truck with true North American roots that was once again engineered by Toyota Technical Center in Ann Arbor, Mich., and its new look designed by Calty Design Research centers in Newport Beach, Calif. and Ann Arbor. Finally, Tundra continues to be assembled exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, in San Antonio, Texas.

“Toyota took customer feedback to heart when developing the 2014 Toyota Tundra,” said Larry Hutchinson, Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc. “In fact the Tundra’s new exterior design and all-new interior were conceived to meet and exceed customer needs and desires for a more chiseled exterior and refined interior with improved driver ergonomics and intuitive technology.”

The 2014 Tundra will have a grade strategy consisting of the hard-working base model, volume-leading SR5, the well-appointed Limited, and two premium grades: “Platinum” and the all-new “1794 Edition”. The new 1794 Edition is a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, on which the Tundra plant is located in San Antonio. Tundra is offered in three cab styles.  The two-door Regular Cab and four-door Double Cab are available in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations, and four-door CrewMax is a standard 4x4 configuration.

Significantly New, Unique Exterior Designs; Distinct Look for Each Grade

Inside and out, each grade embodies a specific theme through distinct designs that go beyond just badging.

The Calty design team set out to create a bold and powerful exterior to embody Tundra’s performance capability. The all-new front design integrates the hood and grille for a chiseled and modern industrial image. Designers increased the size of the front fascia and tightened up the surfaces and character lines to punctuate Tundra’s pulling power and wide stance. The chrome grille has a taller, bolder look visually connecting the upper intake to the lower bumper. The front lower bumpers are now a three-piece design, allowing for grade differentiation and less expensive replacement parts. In addition, the fenders and wheel wells have been squared-off for a wide and sturdy stance.

An all-new bed design helps carry the chiseled character lines all the way down the profile, leading to a rugged new bed and tail gate, with an integrated spoiler and “TUNDRA” stamped into the sheet metal, creating a one-piece forged look. The integrated spoiler in the deck helps with fuel efficiency, while the tail lamps express a tool-like quality to match the appearance of the body. Like the front bumper, the rear bumper changes from one piece to three, for lower replacement costs.

An All-new Spacious Interior; Each Grade with a Unique Identity

Calty’s design team worked closely with the product planners and Tundra engineers to develop an all-new bold interior focusing on styling differentiation between grades and improving the availability of features most important to truck buyers. The all-new interior variations are thematic and cater to a specific customer with a specific budget. Ergonomic improvements include easier driver access to controls as the reach to the audio and HVAC controls was reduced by 66 mm (2.6 inches). Large knobs have been retained so they can be operated with or without work gloves. Overall passenger comfort was improved with an all-new front and rear (CrewMax) seat design and improved front seat ventilation. In addition, front seats have additional travel, and CrewMax rear seats can now be folded up for additional cargo carrying capability while maintaining a comfortable seating back angle.

The interior has a rugged, interlocked construction with an all-new instrument panel. The meters feature 3-D metallic rings and individual gauges grouped in a clear, easy-to-see design with a centre-mounted multi-information display screen. The console design holds multiple storage areas for personal items and electronics plus additional padded surfaces and accent stitching in premium grades. Both Double Cab and CrewMax will be available with a bench or bucket seats for the front row.

The interior of the SR5 features a “professional gear” theme, with unique driver and passenger zones, metallic accents and bold contrasting fabric. Most importantly, the all-new design uses premium surface treatments to enhance interior quality and durability.

The Limited grade has an “active premium” image with leather seating surfaces matching soft-touch stitched door and console surfaces, and wood-style interior trims.

The Limited will be available with Black and Graphite leather-trimmed interiors and will have standard auto HVAC controls.

The Platinum grade has been completely redesigned for the next generation of personal use truckers. It features perforated black leather-trimmed seats with double-stitched diamond plate leather, door and instrument panel inserts, and chrome seat and console accent badging for an upscale yet urban feel. In addition, Platinum uses premium leather never before used on a Toyota truck and comes with many standard amenities, including a 12-speaker JBL audio system with navigation, heated and ventilated front seats with driver and passenger power adjustments, navigation and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

The 1794 Edition reflects a western lifestyle theme and includes exclusive premium saddle brown leather seating with embossed leather and ultra-suede accents. Matching soft-touch materials also accents the shift console, the front and rear door trim, and the instrument panel. Like the Platinum, the 1794 Edition includes an array of standard features that includes heated and ventilated front seats, JBL audio, navigation, and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Two Engine Options Remain Among Segment’s Most Capable

Several enhancements have been implemented on the 2014 Tundra to improve performance. Shock-absorber valving has been re-tuned to improve Tundra ride quality over harsh surfaces.

Steering feel and straight line stability has been improved due to steering system improvements. These improvements reduce the inputs from road variations and imperfections, resulting in improved straight line stability and less driver fatigue.

Patented aerodynamic stabilizer fins are added to the outside surface of the rear tail lamp lens, and the outside mirror bases. These patented “Aero-Fins” reduce the air turbulence along the sides of the vehicle resulting in improved straight-line stability during normal driving conditions and while towing.

Interior cabin noise is reduced from an improved design of engine compartment NVH treatments and innovative engineering to reduce sound transmission from the engine compartment to the vehicle cabin.

Tundra continues to offer two proven powertrains. The 4.6-litre DOHC i-Force V8 offers 310 horsepower and 327 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and the available 5.7-litre DOHC i-Force V8 produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb.-ft. of peak torque\. Both V8’s come standard with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. All Tundra engines feature an aluminum cylinder block and DOHC heads, along with Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for a broad torque curve and optimized efficiency.

The base and SR5 grades will ride on 18-inch styled steel wheels, while the Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition will ride on all-new 20-inch alloy wheels specific to each grade.

Tundra remains the only full-size pickup in the segment to adhere to the SAE J2807 towing standard. When equipped with a tow package, Tundra has a maximum tow capacity of 4,762.7 kg/10,400 pounds (4x2 Regular Cab).

All 2014 Tundras Feature a Number of Segment Firsts

Tundras will feature a number of segment firsts, including a new Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a standard back-up camera (viewed from a 6.1-inch audio display screen) and standard Bluetooth.

The Limited grade adds eight-way power driver seat, standard chrome door handles and outer mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels and a deck rail system.

The Platinum and 1794 Edition come standard with an eight-way power driver’s seat with memory and a four-way power passenger’s seat, both with heat and ventilation, power moonroof, parking sonar, Display Audio with Navigation, and JBL.

Targa Newfoundland to be at the Canadian Motorsports Expo

The Canadian Racing Season Begins February 8, 9 & 10, 2013 at Toronto’s International Centre

TORONTO -  Annually since 2002, the residents of eastern and central Newfoundland have hosted and witnessed the Targa Newfoundland, a week-long, 2,000-kilometre road race that winds its way through 72 communities and the open roads of Canada’s ruggedly beautiful ocean province.

Robert Giannou, President of Targa Newfoundland, will be on hand at the Canadian Motorsports Expo Powered by Inside Track Motorsports News on February 8, 9 and 10 at Toronto’s International Centre and will offer motorsports enthusiasts a personal and behind the scenes look at the world class event that is Targa Newfoundland.

“The Canadian Motorsports Expo is where we will kick off our season,” explains Giannou. “The people who tire kick at the Expo are our type of people; they’re racing people. We can use the CME to expose the fans to our event, describe what we have to offer, and introduce them to our newest class, the ‘Fast Tour’ division.”

There are three distinct categories running in the Targa Newfoundland, with the Targa class, incorporating the Classic, Modern and Open divisions, joined by Grand Touring, a full-on, rallying class. The Fast Tour class is not a competition, but a high speed, cross- country cruise for the owners of exotic vehicles.

The first, and only, event of its kind in the northern hemisphere (the only other Targas take place in Tasmania and New Zealand), the Targa Newfoundland draws competitors from across Canada and the United States and from as far away as Australia, Germany and the Caribbean.

Playing out in front of 150,000 enthusiastic spectators, this cross-country event is run over five days in 43 stages, beginning and ending in St. John’s, with overnight stops in Gander, Clarenville, and Marystown.

There is no prize money in Targa Newfoundland. The drivers, ranging from full professionals to weekend warriors, race strictly for bragging rights and personal fulfillment. Over the past 11 years such notables as past Canadian champion Eppie Wietzes, journalist Jim Kenzie, television personalities Dennis Gage and the Trailer Park Boys, as well as the Soldier-On Team for disabled veterans, have taken part in the event.

Described by racer Doug Mepham as the “most ethereal racing experience you can have,” the Targa Newfoundland continues to draw rave reviews from not only the competitors, but also from the avid throngs of spectators.

“This race is about people fulfilling their dreams. It’s about real cars on real roads. Historically, this is what road racing is really all about,” concludes Giannou.
