Honda Canada recalls 2,000 Fit Sport cars

TORONTO - Honda Canada is recalling about 2,000 Fit Sport vehicles from the 2012-2013 model year.

It's part of a larger Honda recall of nearly 46,000 Fit Sport small cars in the U.S. and Canada.

The company says the recall is to update the Vehicle Stability Assist system software, which will be done free of charge.

It says the VSA system on some of those vehicles equipped with certain tires may allow the tires to lose traction and cause the vehicle to skid under certain test manoeuvres.

Honda says that could result in swerving that exceeds certain Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards requirements.

The company says the issue was discovered during compliance testing. It says it isn't aware of any related crashes or injuries.

Customers will receive notifications of the recall in the mail in May and are encouraged to take their vehicles in to an authorized dealer.

Mexican Red Cross builds Nissan NV into ambulance fleet

Mexico City, Mexico - There now are 30 Nissan NV2500s being used for ambulances by the Mexican Red Cross.  The vehicle was a perfect choice, says the organization, because it can stand up to being driven for many miles on sometimes unstable terrain.

“We have to get to that patient no matter what.  Sometimes you have to take highway roads, sometimes dirt roads. And, this ambulance handles very well,” said Red Cross Ambulance Driver Rene Palacios.

The Nissan NV2500 ambulance was first used by the Mexican Red Cross in April 2012 in a pilot test. After proving its versatility and functionality, the Mexican Red Cross decided to integrate Nissan as a partner for its ambulance fleet this year.

Nissan Mexicana’s President and General Director, José Valls, says the NV2500 won out over other more expensive vehicles. “Now the Red Cross in Mexico has taken the NV2500 as the flagship of the new ambulance.”

The Mexican Red Cross receives over 1.2 million ambulance service requests per year, so the NV2500 will have many opportunities to show its capabilities in terms of reliability and versatility.

Obama administration had advance warning on Fisker

WASHINGTON, DC - Newly released documents show that the Obama administration was warned as early as 2010 that electric car maker Fisker Automotive Inc. was not meeting milestones set up for a half-billion dollar government loan, nearly a year before U.S. officials froze the loan after questions were raised about the company's statements.

An Energy Department official said in a June 2010 email that Fisker's bid to draw on the federal loan may be jeopardized for failure to meet goals established by the Energy Department.

Despite that warning, Fisker continued to receive money until June 2011, when the DOE halted further funding. The agency did so after Fisker presented new information that called into question whether key milestones — including launch of the company's signature, $100,000 Karma hybrid — had been achieved, according to a credit report prepared by the Energy Department.

The December 2011 credit report said "DOE staff asked questions about the delays" in the launch of the Karma "and received varied and incomplete explanations," leading to the suspension of the loan. Fisker had received a total of $192 million of the $529 million loan before it was suspended.

In the June 2010 email, Sandra Claghorn, an official in DOE's loan program office, had written that Fisker "may be in limbo due to a lack of compliance with financial covenants" set up by the Energy Department to protect taxpayers in the event of default. Another document, from April 2010, listed milestones that Fisker had not yet met.

Aoife McCarthy, a spokeswoman for the Energy Department, said the June 2010 email was taken out of context.

"The document shows that one person at a meeting discussed the possibility that Fisker might not meet a financial commitment" required by the Energy Department, McCarthy said in an email late Tuesday. DOE received the needed certification five days later and subsequently made the loan payment, she said.

The Associated Press obtained the Fisker documents ahead of a House hearing scheduled for Wednesday on the federal loan to the troubled car maker, which has laid off three-fourths of its workers amid continuing financial and production problems.

The potential loss of $171 million would be largest loss of federal loan money since the 2011 failure of solar panel maker Solyndra, which declared bankruptcy and laid off all its workers after receiving a $528 million loan from the Energy Department.

The Energy Department seized $21 million from Fisker this month as it continued to seek repayment from the car maker for the 2009 loan. A payment from Fisker was due Monday, but was not made, a DOE official said.

Henrik Fisker, the company's namesake and founder, was scheduled to testify at Wednesday's hearing. Fisker, who was forced out as CEO as the company's troubles mounted, said in prepared testimony that he remained proud of the company's "cutting edge technology," which he said could "pave the way for a new generation of American car manufacturing."

Fisker disputed claims by some critics that the Anaheim, Calif.-based company needed the federal loan to survive. Fisker said a high-ranking Energy Department official approached him in 2008 and asked him to apply for the loan, which is intended to boost electric cars and other advanced vehicles.

"At that time, we already had significant financial backing from private investors," Fisker said in the prepared testimony. In all, the company received more than $1 billion in private financing, he said.

The company met initial milestones set up by the Energy Department before informing the department that it would not meet future goals on time, Fisker said. He denied that any political influence was used to obtain the loan or in negotiations over its terms.

"I am not aware and do not believe that any improper political influence was used in connection with the company's loan application or subsequent negotiations with the Department of Energy," Fisker said.

Vice-President Joe Biden announced in late 2009 that Fisker would reopen a shuttered former General Motors factory in Wilmington, Del., to produce plug-in, electric hybrid vehicles. The plant was never completed and never produced any cars.

Fisker said the company was hurt badly by the 2008 recession and by the bankruptcy of A123 Systems, a Massachusetts company hired by Fisker to make batteries for the Karma. A bankruptcy judge granted Fisker $15 million in a claim against A123 for breach of warranty, a fraction of Fisker's initial claim.

Fisker has not built a vehicle since last summer and has failed to secure a buyer as its cash reserves have dwindled.

Honda recalls 20,000 cars in Canada

DETROIT, MI - Honda is recalling more than 225,000 minivans and SUVs in North America — including 20,800 in Canada — to fix a problem with the automatic shifters.

The recall includes the Honda CR-V small SUV and Odyssey minivan from the 2012 and 2013 model years. Also covered is the 2013 Acura RDX SUV.

Honda says the device that stops drivers from shifting out of park without a foot on the brake may not work properly, particularly in below-freezing temperatures.

The company says no complaints, crashes or injuries have been reported due to the problem. It was discovered during an internal investigation.

Honda will notify owners in mid-May and will make repairs free of charge.

Earlier this month, Honda, along with five other automakers issued a massive recall for 3.4 million older model vehicles worldwide due to defective air bags.

Ford Fusion Hybrid wins Canadian Green Car Award

TORONTO – The Ford Fusion hybrid today won the first annual Canadian Green Car Award.

The award, selected by a panel of expert members of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, was announced at the Green Living Show, in Toronto.

The competition aims to recognize vehicles with the potential for strong environmental benefits and to provide consumers with authoritative information about them.

“We are extremely proud that the 2013 Ford Fusion hybrid has been honoured by our country’s top automotive journalists as the recipient of the inaugural Canadian Green Car Award,” said Steve Ross, Ford of Canada’s product marketing manager, sustainability and electrification. “The Fusion hybrid is an important vehicle in the Ford line-up, delivering leading fuel-economy, innovative technologies and a sleek, desirable design for eco-conscious consumers.”

The Fusion hybrid was among five finalists for the award from 15 environmentally advanced vehicles nominated by their manufacturers.  This group also included the Ford C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, Hyundai Sonata hybrid, Mazda’s Mazda3 highly efficient internal-combustion compact and Volkswagen Jetta Turbocharged Hybrid.

The competition not only emphasized fuel economy and emissions, but also considered other environmental features within each vehicle – for example, use of recycled or naturally sourced materials – and steps each manufacturer has taken to green its operations.  Equally important, it assessed market potential – factors such as build quality, driving experience, overall features, availability, general consumer appeal and price.

“The competition has made it clear that driving a green vehicle isn’t a dull, obligation. On the contrary – they can be great fun,” said Peter Gorrie, chair of AJAC’s Green Car Award steering committee, who presented the trophy. “We’re just at the beginning of a green revolution in cars. We want this award to help everyone understand and appreciate it, and make the best possible choice for themselves and the environment.”

“Green Living is pleased to support and host the award, which fits our focus of helping consumers to make environmentally sound choices,” said Laurie Simmonds, president and CEO of Green Living Enterprises, the show’s operator. “We congratulate Ford and all the manufacturers that nominated such impressive vehicles in the competition, and look forward to many more years of jointly promoting the most innovative green cars on the market.

“AJAC believes that green technologies mean the evolution of the automobile, not its demise,” said president Charles Renny. “The fact that automobiles can adapt and thrive speaks volumes about those who love cars and are passionate about preserving our planet.  The Canadian Green Car Award is the first step down the path of embracing that future.”

Other nominees included the Chevrolet Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel, Chevrolet Volt, Ford Edge EcoBoost, Ford Focus Electric, Mazda CX-5, Mazda6, Mercedes-Benz B 250 Turbo, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf and Smart Fortwo Electric Drive.

Chrysler recalls some 170,000 vehicles

Chrysler has announced separate recalls for roughly 170,000 vehicles, including more than 9,000 in Canada, for problems involving fuel tanks in some SUVs and air bag warning lights in a number of sedans. Chrysler is recalling about 30,000 small SUVs because a faulty hose inside the gas tank. The recall affects Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass four-wheel-drive vehicles from the 2012 model year. The company says the SUVs have saddle-style gas tanks that go around the rear drive shaft. Fuel is pumped from one side of the tank to the other through a hose. But Chrysler says some of the hoses weren't formed right in manufacturing and they can stop the flow of gas, causing the engine to stall. Chrysler says it's aware of one crash but no injuries or fires due to the problem. Approximately 20,500 vehicles involved in the recall are in the United States, 2,300 in Canada, 50 in Mexico and 7,400 outside the NAFTA region. Meanwhile, Chrysler is also recalling almost 138,000 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger sedans made between April 2011 and December 2011, including both 2011 and 2012 model years, because their air bag warning lights can illuminate for no reason. Affected are approximately 119,000 vehicles in the U.S., 7,000 in Canada, 880 in Mexico and 11,000 outside the NAFTA region. Chrysler says no one has been injured as a result of the defect, which is caused by improper wiring. The company started investigating after getting customer complaints. In both cases, Chrysler says it will fix affected vehicles for free.

The Record Breaking Nissan GT-R

SIBERIA, Russia – Russian  race driver Roman Rusinov and auto journalist Andrey Leontjev pushed the Nissan GT-R across a frozen Lake Baikal, setting a new national speed ice driving record of 294.8 kph (183 mph).

The speed record on ice was a joint project of Nissan in Russia and LAV Productions company, taking place at Small Sea Strait – part of the Baikal water area between western coast and Ol’khon isle. The Nissan GT-R 2012 model year used winter non-studded Bridgestone tires.

The length of the track was divided into an acceleration part – 3.5 km, timekeeping part – 1 km, and breaking area – 3.5 km. The driving attempts were fixed and evaluated by a specially-created committee of the Russian Automotive Federation, and also a group of four judges from Yaroslavl, Omsk, Yekaterinburg and Moscow. The car starts from standing position and develops maximum speed on the distance of 1000 meters (1 km). RAF fixes average speed on this route.

The 540-horsepower GT-R production car had no modifications, running the 3.8-liter, V6 engine on the frozen surface of the world’s deepest lake in southern Siberia, with a result for the history books. Enjoy this video of their record ice escapade.

Review: Sailun Ice Blazer WSL2 on regular winter road conditions

The beginning of April is a time where you start planning to shed your vehicle of their trusty winter tires for a nice set of summer performance tires. Unfortunately, the snow keeps on coming down in Toronto, so the change date seems to be pushed back a few weeks.

It will be fun to test out some new summer tires when the time comes, but for now I want to talk about the last month and a half testing out the new Ice Blazer WSL2 tire from Sailun. I waited for a few late snowfalls in order to fully test these Ice Blazer’s out, because a dry test wasn’t going to cut it. It’s a strange time to do a winter tire review as we want to put that all behind us, but I want you to keep this review in mind for next season and perhaps you can always find a great deal on winter tires in the off-season.

Before I can talk about the specific Sailun Ice Blazer tires, I want to fill you in on the company that you’ve probably never heard about – Sailun. Sailun is a Chinese tire company and a division of Dynamic Tire Corp. They’re trying to be more noticeable in the Canadian market as a value tier competitor to the more visible bigger guns in the industry. They have a Chinese origin, but Sailun does perform plenty of tests in Brampton, Ontario and have a larger Canadian warehouse in Vaughan, Ontario. In 2011, they hit ten million in global sales within fifty countries and five continents and expanded that to twenty million in 2012.

Sailun Tires are a growing company that we’ve already featured in the fall with their Atrezzo Z4+AS ultra-high performance all-season tire in a successful blind test versus Continental’s Extreme Contact all-season tire. But if you go back just two years prior, 70 percent of Sailun’s tires were winter tires. The rest of their products were built based on a winter focus, so I was very excited to see how the Ice Blazer WSL2’s would hold up in the Toronto winter.

They were fitted on my 2010 Mazda3 Sport, which has never had the pleasure of winter tires in its three years. I just don’t drive it that often, so there was never a big need to put them on. I might have been the only one praying for a few snowfalls in late February and March, but lucky for me and only me, I got my wish.

You hear it a lot that putting winter tires changes your entire driving experience. The key is how much of a change it creates? Do all winter tires have the same effect? Well I can only talk about these Ice Blazer’s as this isn’t a comparison test, but after testing them out it felt like I had a brand new Mazda3. What a difference it made!

The Ice Blazer is a studless performance winter tire specializing in slush, snow, and wet traction. Let me take you through my journeys on snowy and slushy roads as well as dry roads.

Starting with dry conditions, the Ice Blazer performed admirably. You don’t feel too much of a difference from the previous all-seasons which is exactly what you want on these dry, but cold days. They provide for you a firm ride with a tight cornering grip. It might not be the smoothest of rides, but it’s far from bumpy and uncomfortable. It’s a good feeling to have a firm ride knowing that you will be secure come the next major snowfall.

Winter tires are not meant to be driven hard and fast, but unfortunately I had to suck it up and take it for an aggressive run. I was pleasantly surprised with the control they provide you as well as the lack of noise. In Toronto, we deal with many different weather conditions, but on most days we are blessed with dry conditions. Given that dry isn’t the Ice Blazer’s main focus it got a checkmark in my book.

Off to the good part – the snow. My front-wheel drive Mazda3 was ready for anything that came its way. I put it into drive and accelerated forward with ease digging right through the mid-range level of snow. It’s always nice to feel that confidence while driving and tackling the snow head-on opposed to searching for those grooves and following them up the side streets.

The Ice Blazer’s gave new life to my Mazda3 similar to a hip replacement. It gave me a renewed spirit to want to be more adventurous and take on those corners head-on. Regardless if I was aggressive on turns or driving conventionally I didn’t have to deal with much sliding as the Ice Blazer’s found grip. Windy and slushy roads felt like nothing, as I drove at the speed limit experiencing no slipping or sliding whatsoever.

When it came to some braking tests, the Ice Blazer’s passed again. Under normal stopping situations in medium-level snow I was able to stop reasonably quickly. The Ice Blazer’s braking performed as expected from my previous experiences testing winter tires over the years. To further test out braking I tried some emergency braking at 50 km/h. The Ice Blazer’s immediately dug into the snow and came to a full-stop once again in a respectable time. There wasn’t much sliding at all which made me feel safe and sound. In the slushy conditions, the braking was even quicker as the tires ripped through the slush and brought my Mazda3 to a full-stop impressively fast.

The confidence you gain from driving without stress is immeasurable. For all those people who don’t understand the need for winter tires and how much of an impact they provide, I say test it out for a day.  When you really think about, in the time that you’re using those winter tires – you’re not wearing out those summer performance tires allowing them to last longer.

The best part about Sailun that might tip the scale for those debating to pay for winter tires is the cost. As a value tier tire company – those money concerns slowly dissipate when you can pick-up a 16” tire ranging from $80 to $100. In comparison, if you look up the same size in a Continental, Bridgestone or Pirelli brand – you’re looking in the $150-$200 range. The Ice Blazer’s performed at a level above their retail price and that makes me more than happy to recommend them for next year’s winter season. It doesn’t hurt that you can save some money in the process, so if you’ve always worried about the cost of winter tires or are looking for a great deal on a new set – the Sailun Ice Blazer might just be the one for you.

Tesla Unveils Revolutionary New Finance Product

PALO ALTO, CA -- Tesla Motors announced today that, in partnership with Wells Fargo and US Bank, it has created a revolutionary automotive financing product that provides the best elements of ownership and leasing to Model S customers.

Most people throughout the world prefer to own their belongings, rather than rent what is essentially someone else’s property via a lease. However, leases do provide some key benefits, particularly a low initial payment, tax deductions, lower risk on resale value and the convenience of returning a car without the hassle of reselling it personally.

Working with some of the largest and most respected banks in the country, Tesla has been able to create a new kind of financing product that combines the security and comfort of ownership with all the advantages of a traditional lease. Like the Model S, this product was created from the ground up to provide maximum benefit to consumers, rather than simply duplicating other financing programs that tend to favor companies at the expense of the individual.

How does it work?

US Bank and Wells Fargo have agreed to provide 10% down financing for purchase of a Model S (on approved credit.)

The 10% down payment is covered or more than covered by US Federal and state tax credits ranging from $7,500 to $15,000. New Jersey, Washington and DC also have no sales tax for electric vehicles. These advantages are not available when leasing.

When considering the savings from using electricity instead of gasoline, depreciation benefits and other factors, the true net out of pocket cost to own a mid-range Model S drops to less than $500 per month.

After 36 months, you have the right, but not the obligation to sell your Model S to Tesla for the same residual value percentage as the iconic Mercedes S Class, one of the finest premium sedans in the world, made by Daimler (also a Tesla partner and investor).

Not only is Tesla guaranteeing that resale value, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk is personally standing behind that guarantee to give customers absolute peace of mind about the value of the asset they are purchasing.
