Toyota announces more fuel-efficient engines

Toyota has announced they will be making a new series of engines and will be more efficient than the current engines. The newly-developed series of highly fuel-efficient engines are more improved for thermal efficiency.

The Japanese automaker expects the new engines will achieve fuel economy improvements of at least 10 per cent over its current vehicles. It’s still unclear whether the new engines will make it to North America, however, the new engines will be coming out in the near future in vehicles that are scheduled for a redesign. In total, 14 new engine variations will be introduced to the market worldwide by 2015.

One of the engines the company has announced will be a 1.3-litre unit that uses the Atkinson cycle, technology that is used in the automakers hybrid powertrains. The 1.3-litre will also include an intake port with a new shape that can generate a strong tumble flow and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation system that is paired with electric variable valve timing. The 1.3-litre is capable of about 15 per cent better fuel economy than the current vehicles.

Another engine is the 1.0-litre developed in conjunction with Daihatsu. It has similar technology to the 1.3-litre and has approximately a 30 per cent fuel efficiency improvement when combined with idling-stop functionality.
