Green Car of the Year finalists announced

We live in a day and age when a clean environment and the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions are paramount in the automotive industry. It's nice to see, regardless of the reasoning behind it, and with that a lot more attention gets placed towards the Green Car Journal's Green Car of the Year award.

Since 2005, the Green Car of the Year award has been handed out at the LA Auto Show in November, and they have just announced the five finalists. For this year, it's not surprising that there are no diesels that made the short list. Recently, the Volkswagen AG group gave both trophies back for its overall wins with the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI and the 2010 Audi A3.

For 2016, Audi makes the list again with the A3 e-tron, as well as the Chevrolet Volt, Honda Civic, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Prius. It's a list filled with electrics, hybrids and fuel-efficient gas models.

“This is the strongest field of finalists we’ve seen in our annual Green Car of the Year program,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal. “Each of the five nominees makes a strong environmental statement in distinctly different ways, with a common strategy of recognizing what’s most important to today’s drivers. Their use of wide-ranging powertrain technologies underscores that all approaches are essential to achieving important environmental goals.”

The award will be handed out at the Green Car of the Year's press conference at 9:00am PT on Thursday, November 19.

BMW M2 soon to arrive in Canada

BMW has added a new member to its roster, and this time it's a true 'M' model. The all-new 2016 BMW M2 has finally been revealed, as the successor to the 1-Series M Coupe.

We've seen a lot of M-styled cars come into the picture like the M235i, but the M2 will be the true thing with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged engine cranking out 365 hp and 343 lb.-ft. of torque, and an overboost function that pumps up torque levels up to 369 lb.-ft.. The engine is matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission or a six-speed manual that can hit a top speed of 249 km/h and can accelerate from 0-100/km in 4.3 seconds (manual does a 4.5) with the help of Launch Control.

Along with that performance are impressive rear-wheel driving dynamics and a lightweight aluminum M sport suspension that we've grown accustomed to with the German-brand in its M3 and M4 siblings. The M2 drives on 19-inch wheels with four-piston callipers that are set-up for track braking. The M2 will use an electronic power steering system that according to BMW provides “direct steering feel and precise feedback at both the track and everyday driving.”

The 2016 BMW M2's performance attributes sound exciting, but that same feeling comes with its looks. The M2 receives the typical BMW kidney grille, large intakes, a new bumper that reduces drag, and a quad-exhaust. Inside, you'll find Dakota leather black sports seats with blue contrast stitching to go along with its cool-looking carbon fibre and Alcantara trim throughout.

The 2016 BMW M2 is scheduled to be available at dealerships in the Spring of 2016 with pricing to be announced closer to its market launch.

Volkswagen AG emissions scandal worsens

It's been a rough week for Volkswagen AG, and the automotive community as a whole.

Dating back to September 18, Volkswagen was issued a notice of violation by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) after admitting to selling diesel vehicles with a “defeat device” installed in order to circumvent emissions tests. The device was able to identify when an emissions test was occurring and turn on full emissions in order to pass the test. Once concluded, the diesel vehicle would drive off emitting 40 times the allowable level of pollutants in the United States.

The vehicles in question are the diesels that have either the 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre TDI engine. The investigation started with just under 500,000 affected, but has now reached the 11 million mark globally involving 2009-14 Volkswagen Jettas, Beetles and Golfs, as well as 2014-15 Passats. Audi vehicles weren't excused from this problem and have the same cheating device installed on its A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, TT, Q3 and Q5.

Long-time CEO Martin Winterkorn has resigned from his post, while other Volkswagen AG executives have been cut or suspended. It's a public relations disaster that seems to have a new cloth unravelled each day.

The scandal won't go away, but solutions and change will hope to rectify the problem for its consumers worldwide. Matthias Mueller, the Porsche chief has taken over the helm as the new CEO of Volkswagen AG and we've learned that the new plan is to refit up to 11 million vehicles, a move that could cost the German-brand up to €6.5 billion ($9.8 billion CDN).

Changes will also be made in North America, where Volkswagen Canada, U.S. and Mexico will merge its operations under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Winfried Vahland. It's a part of a decentralization process that will allow Volkswagen North America to make decisions away from the main company, and can be more focused towards its specific region and market.

The deceitful decision by Volkswagen has been damaging enough, but a report by German newspapers that they were warned against rigging emissions back in 2007 by Bosch in a memo has made the situation even worse. Last week, Volkswagen saw its shares go down 35% since the news story broke.

It will be a long road back for Volkswagen, and the company has been cooperating fully with the investigation. If there's been anything good to take out of this thus far, it's the swift and positive progress to rectify this issue for its customer base by Mueller. We will stay on top of this situation, if anything major gets announced.

World's Fastest SUV set for Frankfurt

Bentley plans on making a big entrance at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show with its Bentayga SUV. Not only will it be the most expensive in the market, but now the British-brand is claiming it will be the quickest with a new video titled: “Bentayga: the world's fastest SUV.”

The big reason it can achieve these heights is due to its 6.0-litre, twin-turbo 12-cylinder engine that's expected to produce 600 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. In this video, the Bentayga is seen testing all that power and performance on an oval track, showcasing how fast and powerful this SUV can be. The top speed of 301km/h is pictured in the video, which is 17 km/h quicker than its soon-to-be rival Porsche Cayenne Turbo.

Since 2012, we've heard about the Bentayga SUV when it was unveiled as the EXP 9 F concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Through Bentley's eyes, it was scene as the luxury hauler that will change how we see SUVs.

Slowly Bentley has craftily let out glimpses of the Bentayga with its interior looking like a modern marvel filled with plenty of controls and technology. It will feature a heads-up display, a rotary controller for 4X4 use, and a digital instrument cluster with navigation and a night-vision camera.

But why the name, Bentayga? It's derived from the word “Taiga” – the world's largest snow forest and “Roque Bentayga” – one of the more unique rock formations in the Canary Islands.

The Bentayga will be built at Bentley's factory in Crewe, England and is expected to go on sale next year. It won't come cheap, however, as according to Auto Express, the luxury SUV can be fetched for 180,000 Euros ($267,000 CDN.).

The Bentley Bentayga will be revealed to the world at 11:20am local time on September 15 at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The Nissan Micra Cup with Elvis Stojko

Trois-Rivières, QC – You might have heard of Nissan's new spec-series, the Nissan Micra Cup. It's in its inaugural season with 12 races on the calendar throughout the province of Quebec with stops in historic and popular venues such as the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant and the Circuit Trois-Rivières.

The Nissan Micra Cup features the least-expensive new vehicle in the market, the Micra (starting at $9,998) that has been race-specced for the low price of $19,998. Inside, every racing subcompact gets the exact same set-up: a Nismo suspension kit, roll cage, safety equipment and racing seat. It's marketed as the most affordable racing series, and that's not a word of a lie.

The 26-person field is littered with former and current race car drivers, amateurs and racers from Nissan's own global GT Academy. But a certain driver at the Trois-Rivières race I attended stood out in the paddock. It was Elvis Stojko, the Canadian figure skater that was a former three-time World Champion, two-time Olympic silver medallist and seven-time Canadian champion.

The man, who was the first to land a quadruple jump combination and stun the world was competing in the Nissan Micra Cup? As an auto journalist and racing enthusiast, I needed to find some answers, and talk to the former champion.

It ends up he was piloting one of the four Albi Nissan Micras competing at Trois-Rivières (GP3R) in a deal that his manager Jason Sharpe had set-up with Albi Nissan and Nissan Canada. But this deal only came about after a casual conversation with one of Stojko's friends who manages a Nissan dealership in Stouffville, ON.

Stojko was conversing over his promising rise in the karting world with events at the national and international level when the Nissan Micra Cup was brought up. His friend mentioned that the series has had a big buzz around the office, and thought it could be a good fit. Considering that Stojko has never competed in a race car before, the Micra Cup seemed to be a logical next step, and maybe that opening he's longed for.

It might sound crazy to compete in a race car for the first time with professional racers, but karting provides the perfect experience that can prepare you for it. Sure, it will be different, but if GT Academy drivers can do it straight off simulators, why not kart drivers? And perhaps, Stojko's ace in the hole is his history of mental preparation in figure skating.

“The mental process between racing and figure skating is the same,” said Stojko. “It's all about preparing yourself, breathing techniques and being in the zone. The big difference is that in skating if you make one tiny error, it's all over. In racing, you can make an error and still recoup, which is a nice breath of fresh air. Skating has helped my mindset for this, where I can just train, pound some laps and be consistent.”

Ahead of the Micra Cup double race, Stojko had two days of practice at Saint-Eustache, and one practice session at GP3R to familiarize himself with the race-specced Micra.

“This is a lot faster than Saint-Eustache,” said Stojko ahead of his first race. “I still need to figure out the braking points, and how the brakes and tires will handle. It's a steep learning curve, but I'm pretty confident in my abilities and have so much to learn. I have loved every minute so far.”

After qualifying in the middle-to-bottom of the pack, the race wouldn't go as expected as a collision with driver Kevin King would end both their races and send Stojko to a 25th place finish out of 26. Clearly, there was room for improvement, and Stojko showed what he's capable of with a tenth place finish in Race #2. During the race, Stojko would gain eight positions and place ahead of GT Academy driver Abhinay Bikkani, as well as all other Albi Nissan drivers on route to that top-10 position.

The GP3R Micra Cup race was a one-off for Stojko, but possibly the car racing seed has been planted in him. He might have mentioned a desire for a Porsche Cup race next on his wish list...

Ford looking to revive the Ranger

We're at a time in the automotive industry, where small is the 'in' thing. That has translated to more compact offerings not only in the sedan and SUV segments, but also with trucks.

Recently, the biggest influx in new trucks haven't been from the large variety, but in the mid-size range that has been long forgotten. Coming back in the fold were the General Motors' twins the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, which seemed to force Toyota into designing and producing of an all-new Toyota Tacoma in order to keep its long-running lead in this segment.

With all of this buzz surrounding mid-range trucks, Ford appears to be interested in bringing back its Ranger pickup that went away, back in 2011. According to the Detroit News, Ford has been in discussions with union leaders of the UAW, whether they can build the Ranger pickup truck at the Michigan Assembly Plant.

The plan according to the news report is that the Ranger production would begin once the Focus and C-Max concludes in 2018, as production of those vehicles head to Ford's new plant in Mexico. The continuity of a new production line would naturally help American employees sustain their jobs beyond 2018.

“We actively are pursuing future vehicle alternatives to produce at Michigan Assembly and will discuss this issue with UAW leadership as part of the upcoming negotiations,” Ford representatives said in an emailed statement.

The Ford Ranger isn't extinct from the Ford portfolio, it still sells the Ranger in nearly 200 overseas markets.

Necessary devices for a road warrior and their family

Getting ready for a road trip when younger and single took little thought. An overnight bag with a change of underwear, a toothbrush and cash for refreshments and food. Maybe.

As relationships blossomed, so too did the packing for a weekend away. There were always, two different bags. Your significant other would pack a couple of changes of clothing for daylight hours and an alternate outfit for the evening – even if camping! Guys, not much more than when they were carefree bachelors.

Fast forward a few years. It seems as if a veritable check list is required. And if a bigger bag is needed, so be it.

For me and my wife, when we travel together and especially if we travel with our Bernese Mountain Dog, Hugo, packing takes a little longer. Why? The dog has his own bag. Towels, treats, food, bowls, spare collar, couple of leashes, a toy or two and who knows what else.

“My” bag will now contain a couple of changes of clothing, extra underwear and even a razor – as well as some additional hardware that our parents would never have even dreamed of.

Over the past few weeks, we have made a series of road trips. A couple were for the day – in the picturesque hills of Caledon and the defining Muskoka region with slabs of granite and twisted pine trees – and a seemingly endless inventory of chip trucks. The one weekend trip was back to our old stomping ground in the Kawarthas. As was to be expected, we brought along way too much – including some additional toys and gadgets which many now consider to be a necessity if we travel anywhere that does not involve tokens or transfers. That includes those day trips, too.

A few short years ago, some people had mobile phones – before the apparent ubiquity of today’s proliferation of smart phones. Making calls and sending texts was, relatively speaking, expensive so few were completely “dialed in” – or to be more accurate – plugged in.

Today, we seem to think that our very lives as we know them are defined by the gadgets we tell ourselves we need, we must have – could not possibly do without.

Smart phone? Check. MP3 player of some description (if not using our smart phone)? Check. Tablet of some description? Check. Laptop? Hmm…maybe not so much these days.

Naturally, the more people in your crew or entourage, the number of lithium-ion battery-driven devices increases exponentially.

For the record, Hugo has no such devices – nor does he have a page on Facebook to update.

We deliberately chose the areas we intended travelling for our road trips – a little off the beaten path and in areas where we could practically guarantee that multiple bar reception on mobile devices was almost certain to be unavailable.

Rather than taking the “press car de semaine” we elected to use our own chariot, a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited – after all, Hugo was to be a passenger and while an excellent traveller, I had no personal desire – or appetite – to detail any loaner vehicle afterwards.

The Santa Fe was, indeed an excellent choice since there are four different outlets for devices – not including USB ports. This would be a useful feature since we pre-determined that any charging would occur while in the SUV rather than at our ultimate destination(s).

To assist us in our endeavour, Canadian Tire made arrangements to provide us with some tools specifically designed for any potential challenges that may present themselves to travellers who insist on remaining connected and in control at all times – regardless of where they are – or even, in some cases, what they may be doing.

The first “appliance” we brought along was a device known as the weBoost Drive 4G-S. Long story short, this is purported to amplify voice and data on a cradled smart phone – including 4G LTE. In fact, the manufacturer claims that with this booster, you will receive reliable cell signal, more consistent data speeds and effortless communication on the road. Drive 4G-S gives you a stronger cell signal wherever you go, whether you’re streaming music, using a GPS app or making a call. This is the only 4G-compatible, five-band signal booster with a cradle design. It’s important to remember that this unit is NOT recharging your mobile device when it is active in the cradle. While this particular model “amplifies” the signal of the active phone, it’s intended to boost any and all available cell phone signals just about anywhere on the North American continent. And yes, it is compatible with all the major carriers in the United States and Canada. At present, weBoost does not make a similar product for use in Europe so future planned testing in the United Kingdom is now off the table. It boosts the most important frequencies at a fraction of the cost, which is great if you don't mind keeping your phone in a cradle – of course, if you are taking advantage of the Bluetooth feature in your vehicle, is of no consequence. After all, safety first.

For the record, this was very easy to set up – you only have to “install” a four-inch magnetic antenna, which connects to the cradle with a 10-foot coax cable. While initially a little skeptical, the unit did everything advertised. It was especially important on the weekend trip to the Kawarthas – wide open spaces, rolling hills and no proliferation of cell towers. We were anticipating a couple of important calls and a time-sensitive confirming text; the Drive 4G-S did not disappoint. It is also possible to buy an add-on so you may use the exact same system at home. How many dead zones do you have in your house or apartment?

The downside (for me, at least), after a three hour drive, the cradle itself did seem a little on the warm side. This did not, however, appear to have any adverse effect on the unit itself.

The next “toy” was The Lifesaver III 9000mAh portable power pack. This was something which has seen a great deal of use. An interesting feature of this device is the fact that you have the ability to charge two devices simultaneously via a USB connection. From a full charge, it is possible to charge a power-depleted smart phone in about one hour. On that same drive to the Kawarthas, we fully-charged one BlackBerry and an iPhone – then, recharged the power pack itself from one of the Santa Fe’s conveniently located USB ports. Over the course of the weekend, this device was able to keep us charged and in the loop ready for anything social media, email or the internet, generally, cared to throw at us. On the final evening, we charged a tablet and a smart phone together – and then recharged the power pack on the drive home.

Finally, we were able to “play” what I considered a true “toy” – a dash cam! We had no intent to use it as an example of Russian driving skills, but more as a, dare I say, social experiment. While there are few who have either never heard of dash cams or witnessed any of the recorded “incidents” readily available on YouTube, there really is not the proliferation of these devices you might expect.

In the former Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries, they are pretty much considered an essential component to driving – especially if involved in a crash of some description and assuming you are the plaintiff, there is then tangible video evidence available. The device tested was fairly new to the market – a Uniden CAM650. Set up was very straightforward – pretty much plug and play.

This is a compact, affordable full HD 1920x1080 at 30fps, with a 2.7-inch full colour LCD screen that shows you a 170° view angle via a 4X digital zoom lens. Furthermore there is convenient GPS built-in and a handy loop recording available feature in various timed increments. An interesting element and one which requires simple activation, is an attribute called “G-sensor with collision detection mode”. Should you park your car in a lot, leave it to take care of business and someone inadvertently backs into your stationary car, the system activates itself and will record the event – as it happens. The device is relatively sensitive and in testing on various vehicles, found that generally, sedans (shorter windshield, perhaps) picked up quickest on the “surprise” movement – vibrations “travelling” a shorter distance?

There is, however, a feature you might decide to deactivate; the built-in microphone. Initially, you are aware of it and tend to over compensate. However, after some time, the novelty and newness is cast aside and every noise, tune and conversation is recorded. On a longer road trip, there can be occasions when tempers might begin to fray as patience slowly dissipates and civility goes out the window!

So are these devise necessary – or are they just additional toys – must have now items that may soon be relegated to a shoe box or a glove compartment?

As with most things, it comes to down to personal preference.

I use the Lifesaver III portable power pack daily; while I do have a couple of other devices with charging functionality, this one, to date, offers the most versatility – in a relatively non-intrusive manner.

The Uniden CAM650 dash cam I have set up in several cars since it was delivered. Once installed – which literally takes a couple of minutes – you set it and forget it. It will initiate when the vehicle’s ignition is engaged and when you turn the engine off, so too does the camera. Nothing (yet) of any note has happened directly in front of this camera. But when it does, I’ll be ready.

As for the Drive 4G-S booster, it too has been in many cars these last few weeks. Every Monday morning, after picking up a freshly-detailed vehicle from a manufacturer or their agent, I drive around 100 kilometres or so to home base. Depending on the route taken will dictate the effectiveness of the unit. Again, when it’s there, you almost forget about it and for my part, not counting one occasion, I know that I will not be the guilty party whose mobile drops a call at an inopportune moment.

That one time? I forgot to recharge my phone before putting it in the cradle…

Ford F-150 going luxury with new Limited trim

Ford has raised the bar for pickup trucks with the addition of the new upscale F-150 Limited, expected to go on sale later this year.

The Limited trim will be slotted above the current top-of-the-line Platinum to cater to what Ford is calling the “growing, untapped needs of luxury customers looking for exclusivity.” With the trend of consumers going for the more high-end Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum trims, and the non-existence of luxury automakers in the pickup truck segment, this addition only seems natural and can showcase what Ford is capable of.

“The F-150 Limited sets a new bar for what discerning customers should expect in a high-end truck,” said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. “We’re adding segment-exclusive technology, and features that improve productivity, convenience and capability with distinctive style.”

It sits on unique 22-inch polished aluminum wheels, and will feature satin-chrome door handles and chrome exhaust tip, as well as a unique grille with a satin-finished chrome badge on the tailgate. If you're looking for even more pop, a raised dimensional LIMITED script is stationed on the hood.

The upscale touches continue in the interior with seats that are made out of Mojave leather that are complemented by fiddleback eucalyptus wood and aluminum accents throughout. The instrument cluster and floor mats are unique to the Limited trim to go along with a laser-engraved VIN plate on the centre console.

The luxuries don't end there, as the front passengers are treated to massaging front seats that has never been featured in any Ford product before. Advanced technologies will include a 360-degree camera system, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert, Lane-keeping assist and Sync3 with AppLink.

As an option, Ford is offering a segment-first Pro Trailer Backup Assist that will help to back a trailer or boat in your driveway. All you would need to do is turn a knob in the direction you want, while the F-150 controls all of the steering inputs.

The only engine offered will be a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 that produces 365 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque that's mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The pickup truck segment is ever-changing with a demand for versatility, handling, cargo, towing and fuel efficiency all-in-one, and now it looks like luxury has been added to the growing list. This F-150 Limited does seem like the most advanced and luxuries truck ever. The question is, will everyone else follow suit?

First pic of the Infiniti Q30 ahead of Frankfurt Motor Show

The Frankfurt Motor Show is always a hotbed for the unveiling of new vehicles. Infiniti is starting early this year by publishing its first official picture of the new Infiniti Q30 Premium Active Compact.

Two years after its initial introduction at this very same show, then known as the Q30 concept, Infiniti will come back to reveal and talk about its production version when the auto show begins on September 15.

The Q30 is the first-ever compact luxury hatch built by Infiniti. It has been designed largely for the European market that drools for compact goodness. It will roll out at the end of 2015 in Europe, and the plan is for it to hit other markets at some point in early 2016 that should include North America.

This compact hatch was born out of the relationship between Daimler AG and Renault-Nissan, the parent companies of Mercedes-Benz and Infiniti. The platform used for it is the same as that found in the A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA of Mercedes. It will share the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as those Mercedes products, most likely with other options that would include a diesel in Europe.

The design, however, is total Infiniti with a double-arch grille and sleeked back skinny LED headlights. The sporty lines across the body show off this hatch's desire for coolness.

"Design is a key pillar of the Infiniti brand, and the new Q30 Active Compact perfectly embodies this approach," said Infiniti president Roland Krueger. "The Q30 Active Compact delivers the distinctive design, the driving dynamics and the individuality that our customers expect of an Infiniti vehicle. With our first ever entry in the compact car segment, we continue the product offensive and provide additional options for our discerning customers."

The Q30 is expected to take on the likes of the BMW 1-Series, Audi A3 and the Volkswagen Golf.

It's being built at Nissan's plant in Sunderland, UK, the same location where the all-new QX30, the slightly larger crossover version of the hatch will also be built.

2016 GMC Sierra refreshed and unveiled

General Motors will not be resting on the success of its Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks. After showing images of its refreshed Silverado, pictures were released showcasing the new looks of its premium option, the 2016 Sierra in SLT, Denali and All Terrain trim.

In the SLT and Denali versions, the chrome grille really stands out with a bold, aggressive look. It's got a no-nonsense truck appeal with LED “C-shaped” signature daytime running lights and LED headlights, as well as new LED fog lamps at the bottom of the bumper.

The All Terrain version looks more like the refreshed Silverado with less chrome in the grille allowing the bumper colour to match it. It will have the signature “C-shaped” LED lights to differentiate it from its sibling.

All of the new GMC Sierras will have an updated infotainment system inside with support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

All trims have their own unique look, and more information will be released closer to the on-sale date in the fourth quarter of this year, around the same time as the Nissan Titan rolls out.
