NY Auto Show: 2015 Subaru Outback

The 2015 Subaru Outback is based on the all-new Legacy, ditching the old body style and receiving a sleeker look. Additionally, the wagon will feature the hexagonal grille. The rear end will have horizontal taillights that emphasize the Outback’s width opposed to the height.

The new Outback has two engine variants. The entry-level will be a 2.5-litre flat-four good for 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Buyers will also have the option of having a 3.6-litre flat-six engine that can push out about 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Both engine variants will be sending the power to all four wheels via a CVT and a torque vectoring setup.

Subaru revised the suspension for the Outback to improve handling and smoother rides. The automaker suggests the redesigned model is quieter than the one on dealership lots at the moment. Acoustically laminated windshields have been added, as well as liquid-filled engine mounts and thicker panels. Additional foam insulation and floor dampening material will help reduce noise in the cabin

Inside the wagon, it wears a more upscale interior with soft-touch plastics and a state-of-the-art infotainment system. Shift paddles are attached to the three-spoke multi-function steering wheel and Subaru’s own EyeSight Driver Assist System is available as an option.

Fuel economy ratings for the four-cylinder have been improved on with an estimated 8.0L/100 km in the city and 6.0L/100 km on the highway. As for the six-cylinder, it should achieve 11.2L/100 km in the city and 7.4L/100 km on the highway. Those numbers make the new Outback more efficient than the outgoing model, because of modifications such as a hood crafted out of aluminum, a new electric power steering system and active grille shutters.
