The 2015 Vancouver International Auto Show will be the setting for the inaugural Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Green Car of the Year award.
It will open up press day at the Vancouver show, which has been moved from its typical morning spot to the afternoon to run straight into a VIP evening event. At 1pm on March 24, the chair of the Green Car of the Year Kevin Corrigan will announce the winner, voted on by AJAC journalists.
Corrigan points out that a Green Car entry: “is a vehicle which, for its size and purpose, provides the Canadian consumer with environmentally-friendly returns that compare favourably with other vehicles in its class.”
Back in October at AJAC's Car of the Year test centre in Niagara Falls, seven vehicles were vying for the award. Currently, there are four finalists: the Honda Fit, Kia Soul EV, Subaru Legacy and Toyota Camry Hybrid. These four vehicles were first announced at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto and have been shown off since February with green car toppers.
After Tuesday's announcement only one will replace its topper with a winner's one. Both the Kia Soul EV and the Subaru Legacy are entered as participants in AJAC's other environmental-focused event, EcoRun, which will start the following day on March 25 with a send-off at 9:30am at the Jack Poole Plaza, on the outside grounds from the auto show.
Additionally, the Green Car of the year winner will be displayed inside the Vancouver auto show throughout the event in the AJAC booth alongside the two Canadian Car of the Year winners for sedan and truck.
